New Delhi, 25th Sept 2008: All of us recognize the importance of efficient and effective urban transportation in economic growth and development. In India, many of our urban areas have understood and agreed with this message and have launched themselves towards providing mass rapid transit systems. Yet it is necessary to stress on this repeatedly.
Keeping this in mind, Engineers have taken a step forward and in the leadership of Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Indian Association of Bridges and Structural Engineers in association with Consulting Engineers Services (I) Pvt Ltd had organized a Lecture Session on “Prospect of Mass Transit in India” on 23rd Sept 2008 at India Habitat center. The two hour Lecture/Presentation was presented by Dr E. Sreedharan, Managing Director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC).
Speaking on Mass Transit in India Dr Sreedharan mentioned in this modern India managing traffic is an issue on which each individual has to take special care. Due to this rapid growth in vehicles we need to maintain our roads, and surely concentrate on a technology which will not only make help to have hassle free Delhi but also reduce road accidents to its optimum.
Prof S S Chakraborty who is the Senior Country Representative of ICE and Chairman-cum-Managing- Director of CES welcomed all high profile Government officials, contractors and representatives from funding agencies. This is a very crucial time when many issues are converging- one of them being urbanization itself, the total number of population as well as the area extent of urbanization. Secondly the imposition of natural resources due to the high energy density living in urban areas and concerns on the pollution, environmental fund including pollution and global warming issues. The three issues has to be tackled holistically handled while trying to provide door to door transport system service that precluding use of personal vehicles. In this context we turn to multi-modal integration with the primary system being railways metro.
Mr G Sharan Director General, Department of Road Transport and Highways cited examples on all the technological challenges that they together met and is still coping up while taking a metro line through congested built-up areas.
A unique forum was organized to educate the masses on the prospects and relevance of the mass transits in India interfaced in matters related to sharing of knowledge amongst diverse professionals from the field of civil engineers and Government and funding agencies. The Seminar was well attended by Government officials, contractors and representatives from funding agencies.
