The Plot
Guided by Ben Affleck, The Town is based on a novel by Chuck Hogan and set in the Charlestown vicinity of Beantown , which, an onscreen subtitle informs us, is home base to more bank and armored car robbers than any other square mile in the world . Affleck acts one such robber, Doug MacRay, who directs a pack of rubber-mask-wearing heist-pullers that includes trigger happy best friend Jem (Jeremy Renner), driver Gloansy (Slaine) and tech expert Des, though they're also asked to fork over a cut of each bank job to florist-slash-gang-boss Fergie (Pete Postlethwaite).

When Jem briefly has bank manager Claire (Rebecca Hall) hostage on their latest job, Doug gets to know her in order to find out if she could name them, but before long sees himself falling for her and contemplating a exit out of the bank robbing game . In the meantime, dogged FBI Agent Frawley is hot on their track, which causes their following stickup lots more of a risk .

The Good
Affleck's focus is brilliant, firmly cementing his gift as a film director after Gone Baby Gone. The action sequences are peculiarly good , most notably a thrilling car chase and a tense shoot-out ( respective critics make depicted comparisons with Michael Mann), but Affleck as well exhibits a potent eye for detail and maintains a nice tempo throughout.

Affleck has as well upped his game acting-wise, delivering his top leading performance to date as Doug and convincing both in the romantic sequences and the harder moments. The rest of the ensemble are as good , in particular Hall ( sailing through even another note-perfect American accent), Hamm (clearly enjoying himself as the no nonsense Agent Frawley), Renner (brilliant as ever, though perchance somewhat under-used) and Postlethwaite (genuinely chilling), while Blake Lively (as Doug's ex-girlfriend and Jem's sister ) and Chris Cooper (as Doug's incarcerated pop) make strong impressions with their relatively short screen time.

The Great
The heavily-accented dialogue is splendid and the script throws up various effective lines, such as Frawley sounding off that "We'll never get 24 hour surveillance unless one of these idiots converts to Islam".

Is it Worth seeing ? .
The Town is a well created, wondrous acted thriller that sustains Ben Affleck's natural talent as a film director. The Town film is highly recommended.
