Belleville resident Mark Page and his wife awoke to the sound of breaking glass in their Illinois home the other night. Suspecting a burglar, Page went downstairs and found a 10-point buck in his kitchen. Upon seeing the source of the noise, he promptly returned upstairs, deciding not to mess with the large, uninvited guest. But the deer was already spooked, and burst through a window to escape. When Page inspected his home, he found that the deer gained access through another closed window. In the end, Page was left with considerable damage to his home. Police searched for the injured animal with no success.
Usually deer won’t cause this amount of extensive property damage inside a home; deer mainly wreak havoc on backyards, trampling flowerbeds in search of food within vegetable gardens and yards. Homeowners use many methods to keep deer from destroying their properties, with some more successful than others.
Fences can be used, although they can be costly and time-consuming, especially for homeowners with large properties. Plus, many a hungry deer has thwarted a fence to devour a garden. Deer-resistant plants often fail to work, especially when food is scarce.
Natural deer repellents have consistently proven effective at keeping deer out of homeowner’s yards. Easily applied with a spray bottle, the most effective natural deer repellents target deer’s heightened senses of taste and smell. Look for deer repellents containing natural ingredients, such as putrescent egg, garlic and capsaicin. Putrescent egg mimics the smell of a dead animal, making deer believe that a predator is nearby and causing them to flee the area in fear. Capsaicin is a taste deterrent that elicits instant irritation, causing deer to stop feeding.
Studies have shown that using a deer repellent with an unpleasant aroma alone is not enough to keep hungry deer away. By targeting both taste and smell, dual-action deer repellents will be more effective at keeping deer out of homeowner’s yards.
With the concerns of chemicals and their effects on the environment, many homeowners use certified organic deer repellents, which are those that bear the OMRI logo. With a certified organic repellent, your family, the deer, and the environment are kept safe from exposure to unnatural chemicals. Most importantly, these products are safe to use on vegetable plants.
The right natural deer repellents can stop these creatures of the night from damaging homeowner’s yards, and maybe even breaking into their homes.
