NEW YORK, NY – Jessica Kirson is sharing the love on Valentine’s Day and is joining forces with Safe Horizon to produce a concert event that will entertain and provide an opportunity for 2,000 audience members to learn about domestic violence and how they can help support the prevention of these crimes. “The fact that approximately 2.5 million American children are abused annually and the unbelievable amount of up to six million women battered every year as well makes my stomach turn. This is totally unacceptable and both women and children need to feel safe in their own homes,” said Jessica Kirson, a nationally known stand-up comedian who has been seen on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and as a finalist in Seasons 2 and 3 of Last Comic Standing. “That’s why I decided to align myself with Safe Horizon. Their mission targets the issues that concern me most about our society.”
“We’ve had a lot of backing from top corporations and private contributions over the years. This event is particularly special in that Jessica is supporting our organization and vision in such a big way, and we are extremely excited to be part of this event,” said Alesia Soltanpanah, Chief Development Officer at Safe Horizon. “Very few people are aware that domestic violence is the leading cause of injury to women between the ages of 15-44. A study conducted in 1991 by the American Medical Association found that one in five girls has been hit, slapped or forced into sex by a boyfriend. We’re also addressing the 95% of violent crime on college campuses that are alcohol related.”
About Safe Horizon
A NYC-based organization, Safe Horizon is the nation’s leading victim assistance organization and touches the lives of more than 350,000 victims of crime and abuse each year. Whether the organization is responding to child abuse, domestic violence, or other violent crimes, it helps victims and their families heal and rebuild their lives.
Facts:
• Domestic violence is statistically consistent across racial and ethnic boundaries. (Bureau of Justice Statistics Special Report: Violence Against Women: Estimates from the Redesigned Survey (NCJ-154348), August 1995, p. 4.)
• In homes where partner abuse occurs, children are 1,500 times more likely to be abused. (Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, Family Violence: Interventions for the Justice System, 1993.)
• Because domestic violence is an ongoing cycle producing increasingly severe injuries over time, battered women are likely to see physicians frequently. (Children’s Safety Network, Domestic Violence: A Directory of Protocols for Health Care Providers (1992) p. (1).)
