On every page, she analyzes it with a powerful voice." — The Virginian-Pilot ["Coast"">

(ITHACA, NEW YORK) Before the founding of Jamestown and before the Mayflower crossing, pioneers set up an outpost on Roanoke Island. This lonely settlement was the first British attempt to colonize the New World. It would come to be known as the Lost Colony, and its story is key to America’s history.

Deborah Homsher’s The Rising Shore – Roanoke recounts the story of the Lost Colony, told by two women who sailed from London to the American shore in 1587 – Elenor Dare, daughter of the expedition’s leader and mother of the first English child born in North America, and her servant, Margaret Lawrence.

Historically, the company’s governor left his followers to seek support in England, returning three years later to an abandoned fort where more than 100 men and women had disappeared. The mystery of their disappearance has never been solved, but Homsher’s novel rediscovers those vanished pioneers and brings them to life with its detailed portrayal of the challenges and vast landscapes they encountered, and the courage of the women who ventured.

Homsher can discuss:
• How this story relates to the story we all know of the pilgrims at Thanksgiving
• The Lost Colony as one of America’s greatest mysteries
• Her interest in female American immigrants
• The research involved to create her novel

Homsher lives in Ithaca, New York. She has published two nonfiction books, Women and Guns: Politics and the Culture of Firearms in America and From Blood to Verdict: Three Women on Trial. She writes about women who have joined American adventures and faced American dangers. Visit www.risingshoreroanoke.com for more information.
