Brian Heagney embodies the do-it-yourself spirit with the publication of Thumbs: Stories, Sketches and Stupid Little Comic Strips through Lulu (www.lulu.com), the world's fastest-growing provider of print-on-demand books.
In 1999, Brian Heagney decided he didn't like the majority of comic strips available, and opted instead to create his own. While his initial attempts were shoddy and off-model at best, he spent the next seven years teaching himself how to draw consistently in various styles and honing his craft.
“If you have a funny idea and think someone should draw a comic strip about it,” Brian Heagney says, “just grab a pen and paper and draw it yourself.”
Thumbs: Stories, Sketches and Stupid Little Comic Strips is the culmination of seven years and seven collections of self-published, poorly-xeroxed amateur comic strips which focus on a young boy named Thumbs. In keeping with the do-it-yourself spirit, this collection includes a “how to draw comic strips” chapter for aspiring novices, as well as a flip-book feature which chronicles the artistic development of the main character from little scribbles to consistently executed drawings.
