Cambridge Super 8 Film Festival

(SANEPR.com) April 13, 2009 -- For those who don’t know, Super 8 is a 8mm cartridge based film system, introduced by Kodak in 1965. The cartridges load straight into the camera, making it an easy to use ‘home movie’ format. Although technology has advanced greatly since the introduction of Super 8, many filmmakers still like to use the medium today, for the over saturated and grainy qualities that make it famous.

UK Director Edgar Wright, of Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the dead and Spaced fame is known to be a big fan of Super 8. Making many shorts in his teenage years, he often still uses the film. It would seem Super 8 has helped boost budding directors to stardom, with one of Tim Burton’s first film escapades being shot on super 8 when he was just 13 years old. Other well known directors have also dabbled in the medium, enjoying the vignettes and old-fashioned feel. Oliver Stone often uses Super 8 to give a different look to his films, notably in The Doors, Natural Born Killers and JFK.

For the first time in the UK, the German director Dagie Brundert will introduce 27 of her short films. Personal and funny, her films are pure poetry. This is an exclusive opportunity to learn from the best in a two-day filming and processing workshop. This years film festival is proud to host the world premiere of Love Suicides by David Teague in the Panorama Programme on Thursday 30th of April. Teague will be bringing along the film crew of Love Suicides to attend the premier. Cambridge Super 8 is also excited to unveil a little local nostalgia with the rather special programme entitled, ‘Cambridge memories’.

Organisers are currently looking for amateur Super 8 Films shot in Cambridge in the 60s, 70s and 80’s in a celebration of history in the making. If you have film reels of events (such as the Queen's silver jubilee, boat races, etc.) or just of day-to-day life in Cambridge or in local villages, get in contact: E: memories@cambridge-super8.org T: 01223 321705 and you may even see them shown at a very special screening on Saturday 1st of May during the afternoon.

Tickets are on sale now at £4 (£3 students) per screening, or you can enjoy the entire four-day festival, and all screenings for just £16 (£11 students). The Super 8 Film festival will run at 2 locations, the Mill Lane Lecture Rooms and University Social Club.
