In 1936 Jones visited St Andrews with a group of friends en route to the Berlin Olympics with the intention of playing a quiet round on the Old Course. However word had spread of his impending arrival and when he arrived at the first tee an enormous crowd had gathered there to see the great man play. Throughout the day the crowds continued to grow and after finishing with a score of 72, he shook hands and signed autographs with the citizens of St Andrews who had come out to see him play.
 
Bobby Jones was invited back to St Andrews in 1958 to be honoured and given the freedom of the city. “I could take out my life everything but my experiences here in St Andrews and I would still have had a rich and full life," Jones said as he acknowledged his gratitude for the friendship he had always felt from the people of St Andrews.
