Football Bloggers want the British Cup

UK (SANEPR.com) May 14, 2009 -- A total of 1107 football bloggers voted for and against the British Cup concept at a new blog site called Football News Latest. 697 football bloggers voted for the new British Cup (63%). The fact that over a third of the voters still want the Carling Cup backs the FA’s current stance to keep the competition which has come in many different commercial guises over the past 30 years.
The League Cup, introduced in 1960 (bit of history about the competition) began as a trophy based on the advent of flood light stadiums, with the games being played on mid week evenings. Even back then, there was a perception from some clubs that this was a ‘Duffer’s Cup’ until automatic entry into the UEFA Cup for the winners became the big draw. Since the eighties, the League Cup was sponsored by many organisations, known as the Milk Cup (sponsored by the Milk Marketing Board), the Littlewoods Challenge Cup, the Rumbelows Cup, the Coca-Cola Cup, the Worthington Cup and now is known as the Carling Cup.
In July 2009, the UEFA Cup is set to be rebranded to the UEFA Europa League, with a wider group stage than ever before and a slightly stricter qualification system mainly targeting the smaller nations with lower quality leagues. This is likely to have little or no impact on the way that teams in the UK approach the Carling Cup.
So, could it be that there are just too many cup competitions in the UK football world? If 37% of people questioned didn’t want the British Cup could well mean that a big proportion of these respondents just don’t care.
May be the British Cup wouldn’t be the answer, but surely it would refresh some of the England – Scotland rivalry within both the lower league teams and the Rangers/Celtics of the world.
