Fusion splicing maintains a continuos optical waveguide by melting two fibers together. The key to a successful splice is to provide just enough energy to the fibers so that the molten core and the cladding do not mix.
Fusion splicing is preferred over mechanical splices for its inherent durability and strength. The average fusion splice loss for Singlemode fiber is about 0.02dB and for Multimode 0.01dB.The GAO-730 also splices Dispersion Shifted, Non-Zero Dispersion Shifted, and Erbium Doped fibers. Mechanical splices typically have 0.1 up to 0.3dB loss.
The GAO-730 automatically adjusts to environmental conditions by using temperature, humidity, and pressure sensors to provide constant feedback control to regulate the fusion arc temperature. This insures uniform quality splicing over a wide range of atmospheric conditions.
