The global positioning system (GPS) is a space-based satellite network originally created and realised by the US Department of Defence for use as a military and intelligence application in the 1960s during the Cold War. It came out of developments in technology after World War II and was additionally inspired by the first man-made satellite Sputnik launched by the Soviet Union in 1957. GPS is a constellation of satellites that orbit the earth at fixed points far above the planet and beam down signals to anyone using a GPS device. The GPS system provides accurate and reliable location and time information anywhere on or near the Earth.
