Lap of Luxury Lap Desks Announces Lap Desks Are Now Entirely Hand Made

Lap of Luxury Lap Desk owner Kathleen Hogan announces that as of July 1, 2008, lap desks will be entirely handmade by her in her workshop. Previously the wood tops were cut in a commercial shop. “I want to give a personal touch to the desks,” she states. “Buying a product that is handmade in America is important to my customers. A handmade lap desk becomes an heirloom.”

Making lap desks requires a working knowledge of routers, belt sanders, four types of saws, nail guns, and various hand tools. Ms. Hogan learned to use all of these tools as an adult, as part of her career as a pediatric physical therapist. She made some of the equipment that she used in her practice; for example, upright poles that allowed children with balance problems to maintain a standing position and balance boards to stand on and challenge higher level balance skills. Her experience and medical background enabled her to design a product that helps with postural control as well as allows her to continue to use the shop tools she loves. “The wood is alive” she states. “I love to work with it. Even after they are sanded, the edges of the lap desks develop small rough spots. I use an oil finish to keep the wood soft. Small inconsistencies in the making of each desk add charm to the total product.”

Lap Desks are available in two sizes and are used by both adults and children. They are used as writing tables, food trays, lap top computer tables, and as portable work platforms for holding books and hobbies. The raised surface allows the user to maintain good posture and visual control. Now that they are completely handmade, they make excellent “Made in America” gifts.

Custom orders are welcome; for example, extra wide desk tops or pencil ledging that runs around all four top edges. Desks are shipped the day following the order. Customer service is vital to this company and personal contacts are the norm.
