Pilibhit. More than 20 BJP workers were injured when police resorted to lathicharge and firing while trying to prevent them from entering the jail premises along with Varun Gandhi, who was sent to judicial custody till March 30.

Police opened fire when lathicharge and teargas could not control the mob, who were adamant on entering the jail and even attacked the policemen escorting Gandhi in custody.District BJP youth president Ramchandra along with two other party supporters received bullet injuries while another party worker Lokesh Gangwar was rushed to the hospital with a critical head injury.

The situation in the city was tense but under control as Gandhi`s supporters waved saffron flags and shouted slogans. A large contingent of security force was present and the situation was being strictly monitored by the Election Commission.

Sources said at least 10 people were injured in the clash and were rushed to hospital. Several others were being treated at the private hospitals.

Police also used force against Gandhi`s supporters when they blocked the roads at the court premises in protest against sending their leader to jail.

BJP supporters raised the slogans of ``Jai Sri Ram`` and ``Varun Bhaiyya Zindabad`` during their protest.Earlier, police refused to agree to the plea of Gandhi to go to the jail on foot and forced him into a vehicle.The local court had sent him on two-day judicial remand and would hear his bail plea on Monday.
