Modelling Careers Lead to Many New Opportunities, says Models Direct

UK (SANEPR.com) June 26, 2009 -- A career in modelling is a gateway to many new opportunities, says one of the UK's largest modelling agencies, Models Direct. Just take young Ghanaian-British supermodel Amanda Annan as an example. Picked up at the age of 16, her modelling career took off incredibly quickly. Before she knew it, she had all kinds of assignments and job offers on the table.

“Typically, when young people dream of becoming a model they are attracted by all the glitz and glamour they imagine comes with the job,” says Damien O'Connor, Managing Director of Models Direct. “Often they don't realise that working as a model can be very demanding, or that it opens up many work opportunities beyond the modelling and fashion industries.

Though she is not far into her modelling career, Annan, the niece of former United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, has been quick to take up these other opportunities. She has begun to establish careers in acting and broadcasting, and has been heavily involved in a number of charities.

She has helped to raise funds for the African Film Commission for example, and the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED). “CAMFED is an organization that supports the education of women in five African countries,” she says. “They basically provide full support to these girls so they can go to school and their parents do not have to worry about fees, clothing or food. This saves a lot of girls from early marriages and also helps them become more self-sustaining in their society. CAMFED has so far educated about 4 million women.”

It just goes to show that there can be a lot more to a modelling career than appearing on catwalks in Milan and Paris. The highlight of it all? “I think the best thing to happen to me in my career was it gave me the opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela,” says Annan.
