Monkey World goes bananas for local heroes

(SANEPR.com) June 8, 2009 -- Do you know someone with a big heart who devotes time and effort to making Bournemouth a better place?

The launch of Bournemouth’s Unsung Hero Awards 2009 took place at Monkey World in memory of the late local hero Jim Cronin.

Nominations are now being sought for the competition, organised by the partnership organisation Bournemouth 2026. The finalists will be invited to a grand awards night at the Highcliff Hotel and treated to a three course meal.

Organiser Clare Hickinbotham said: “There are many inspirational people in our community working tirelessly to make a difference and this is our chance to say thank you and give them the recognition they deserve.”

Alison Cronin of Monkey World, who was guest of honour at last year’s ceremony, said: “Last year’s awards revealed some amazing people who devote their lives to helping others. Jim was a great believer that every single person could make a difference and he really believed in the spirit of the unsung hero – we’re delighted to be supporting these awards in his memory.”

The competition has four categories and all are open to individuals and groups. The Clean and Green Award, sponsored by Transdev Yellow Buses, is for those who have made a difference to their community environment. The Crime Buster Award, sponsored by Dave Wells Properties, is for those who have helped reduce crime or antisocial behaviour.

The Fighting Fit Award recognises those who help improve people’s health and well being and the Heart of Gold Award will go to someone who champions the cause of others in their community, such as the elderly or the disabled.

One finalist will also receive the Hero of the Year Award, which is sponsored by J.P. Morgan.
