More Sport Pilots Take to the Air with Travers Aviation Insurance

St. Louis, MO, October 13, 2009 -- Obtaining most pilot licenses can be a lengthy and expensive process. However, the FAA’s new sport pilot certification allows individuals to obtain flying licenses in less time and for lower costs than what is required to obtain a private pilot license. As such, this emerging new segment has become an optimal way for inactive pilots, who may have stopped flying for financial reasons, and for the large group of individuals who want to learn to fly to be able to start flying.

To obtain a sport pilot license, individuals need a valid driver’s license. Unlike private pilot licenses, no additional FAA medical examinations are required. In preparation, individuals are required to complete 20 hours of training, as opposed to 40 hours for a private pilot license. The 20 hours of training include dual flying with an instructor, cross-country flying and supervised solo flights. Prospective pilots will also need to take a written examination and will undergo an oral and practical flight test at the conclusion of the training period. Once certified, the new pilot will want to obtain aviation insurance specific for the sport pilot and aircraft.
