Oakmead Pupils Clean Up

(SANEPR.com) June 2, 2009 -- A green line has been drawn in the battle against litterbugs at Oakmead College of Technology, thanks to the pupils themselves.

Pupils have asked for additional litter and recycle bins around the north Bournemouth campus, as part of a drive to make the school greener and more sustainable.

A Green Day at the secondary saw normal lessons suspended for youngsters in years seven and eight and replaced with special ‘green’ activities across the curriculum.

These included pupils working in the school allotment outside helped by the Dorset Wildlife Trust, and inside creating environmentally inspired dance routines and music aided by teaching staff.

During the past few months, members of the school council have been liaising with fellow pupils and staff about sustainable changes they would like to see implemented.

This has led to energy audits being carried out by youngsters, new bike sheds installed and work done by the school canteen to cut back on food packaging.

Pupils say their next area of attack is wasted energy caused by lights being left on.

“Our college council students are very aware that sustainability is the foundation of their future,” said a school spokeswoman.

“Oakmead is a leading secondary school for sustainability and co-ordinates with Bournemouth Borough Council to work towards this.”
