The reason is the same as for the strategy engine, being able to get useful information to step ahead of market competition. Those are complex components and there are many people that do not belief in the value of them. The basic technique is to scan networks such as Facebook, twitter, Yahoo! Finance, and others, to get all posts related to a specific stock; the scanner then extracts the wording of such posts and filters emotions out of it. So, let's say some people at company XYZ gets fired and posts disparaging things on public boards or social networks. The scanner then gets a ranking of words where more and more posts come along containing information such as fired, bad management and so on. That could be used to trigger a sell or buy on company XYZ' stock.
