During this period of economic instability, it is a given that companies are looking to cut costs and get more bang for their buck, especially when investing in new technologies is the topic for discussion. That is why the University of Wollongong’s Centre for Business Services Science put together a team of researchers to survey organizations in several industries to calculate the relative importance of a multitude of attributes that influence the decision to invest and adopt RFID technology.
The result is a comprehensive analysis of organizational benefits and risks titled RFID Adoption Issues, authored by Mr. Samuel Fosso Wamba, Dr. Byron Keating, Dr. Tim Coltman, and Dr. Katina Michael. Supported by content experts and industry partners including project champions Mark Roberti, founder and Editor of RFID Journal, Mark Shapiro of Can/U.S. Enviro RFID, Anthony Palermo of Academia RFID, and participants of the 2008 WINMEC Research Forum at the University of California (Los Angeles), the study provided insight into the factors that matter most (and least) during the investment decision process.
Mr. Fosso Wamba, academic founder of Academia RFID Centre of Excellence in Montreal and lecturer at the University of Wollongong’s School of Information Systems and Technology said, “There is this burning question being asked; despite large retailers investing and benefiting from cross-operational RFID implementations, why aren’t we seeing industry-wide adoption, or more specifically perhaps, application-specific adoption? This was the catalyst for the study and luckily the participants surveyed were not reluctant to answer; providing us with a valuable end-user perspective.”
“It’s critical for the RFID industry to understand the concerns of potential end users and the issues that are preventing them from investing in RFID so that these can be addressed. This study goes a long way towards helping us do that,” added Mark Roberti.
