Registration Sells Out for Krispy Kreme Challenge
Record Turnout of 6,000 Participants for Charity Race

RALEIGH, N.C. (January 29, 2010)—The sixth annual Krispy Kreme Challenge (www.krispykremechallenge.com), a North Carolina State University student-organized charity race, will be held Saturday, February 6, 2010. Record attendance of 6,000 runners is expected for the race that benefits the North Carolina Children’s Hospital. Registration, capped at 6,000 due to road capacity of Hillsborough Street, is closed, but organizers are encouraging individuals to support the event by financial donation and merchandise purchase (http://krispykremechallenge.com/_catalog_75350/K2C_Merchandise).

“We are amazed at the growth of the Krispy Kreme Challenge in its first five years,” says Kalie Porterfield, one of the event organizers. “The tremendous community support helps us provide an annual donation for the kids and families at North Carolina Children’s Hospital.”

To complete the Krispy Kreme Challenge, competitors begin at the NC State Bell Tower at 8:30 a.m., run two miles to the Krispy Kreme store on Peace Street, eat a dozen doughnuts, and run two miles back to the Bell Tower—all in under one hour.

Beginning as a dare between 10 NC State students in 2004, the competition has grown exponentially to 5,500 participants in 2009. Last year the event raised $40,000 for North Carolina Children’s Hospital. The event attracts a wide range of runners and enthusiasts from beginners to seasoned competitors hailing from all corners of the country.

Now in its sixth year, the Krispy Kreme Challenge has grown to an astounding 6,000 participants and was listed as #85 on the “102 More Things You Gotta Do Before You Graduate” list by Sports Illustrated. Organizers wanted the challenge to be a unique tradition, but saw the opportunity to use it as a means to give back to the local community as well. About the North Carolina Children’s Hospital:
The North Carolina Children's Hospital is a specially designed hospital that caters to the needs of children that are sick or injured, and their families. The state-of-the art facility was designed with children in mind, and provides conveniences to the patients that help them to just be kids, such as a two-story play atrium designed to look like an outdoor park.
