(SANEPR.com) May 4, 2009 -- In line with company tradition beyond creating the very finest in luxury watches, Rolex supported the best in racing by sponsoring the 2009 Rolex Women’s Match, which was won by Genny Tulloch. Harvard-based racer Genny Tulloch from Tiburn, California and her crack team sailed away with victory in the 2009 Rolex Women’s Match, hosted April 9-12 by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club in St. Petersburg, Florida. Genny Tulloch, ranked #1 on the United States Sailing Team AlphaGraphics, sailed with her Rhode Island-based crew that came together right before the race and came through with flying colors, including Liz Hall, Jamie Haines and Chafee Emory. Altogether, a total of 10 teams competed in the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Grade 3 match-racing regatta, which was created in 2002 to improve opportunities for women sailors specifically interested in match racing. With the win, the #43 world-ranked Genny Tulloch, along with second-place finisher, rugged Debbie Capozz from Bayport, New York, gained an automatic invitation to the Rolex Osprey Cup, an ISAF Grade 1 regatta, to be held October 21-24, at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. “The regatta was really good for us,” said Genny Tulloch as she waited to board a flight to Charleston Race Week. “It is the first time my team has sailed together. There was a lot of stuff we needed to work on; coming out of it in the lead on the last day was awesome.”
Two round robins – where one-on-one matches count for either a win or a loss – were completed over the course of the three days of competition from Thursday to Saturday. Frustratingly, on Sunday, there simply was not enough wind to complete another round. Putting on their thinking caps and making an executive decision, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club Race Committee, under the leadership of Pat Seidenspinner and Tom Farquhar, called it a day. Impressively, Genny Tulloch went undefeated in all 18 of her matches and with that perfect record, she was declared the 2009 Rolex Women’s Match champion. Although Tulloch may have made winning look easy, it was far from it. In truth, it was a challenging race from beginning to end with each day presenting new problems in terms of weather conditions. “The conditions were interesting for match racing,” Genny Tulloch commented, “The wind was puffy, so we all had to keep our heads out of the boat. At times, we had to stop match racing and start fleet racing. We were sailing the shifts and covering our competitors. It got easier with our communications getting better. We really focused on keeping our heads out of the boat. If we were close at the start, we weren’t necessarily using match-racing tactics the way you would in non-shifty conditions. This wasn’t the easiest racecourse so we had to make sure we kept it together.” St. Petersburg Yacht Club hosted dinners on Thursday and Saturday evenings for all of the competitors, race committee, umpires and competitors housing hosts. The Rolex Women’s Match at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club joins other prestigious Rolex-sponsored events including the Rolex Miami OCR, Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Rolex Fastnet Race, Rolex Farr 40 World Championship, Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex, the Rolex Big Boat Series, Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship and the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. If there is one-thing sailors around the world can depend on, Rolex will come through to keep the sport viable whenever sponsorship is in question. Believing in the tradition of racing and history of yachtsmanship, Rolex supports first-class competitors like Genny Tulloch, allowing them to demonstrate their skills in the finest of competitive arenas.
