Rolex presents the Block Island Race Week

The Block Island Race Week is another of Rolex’s endeavors to develop and promote talent. Located in the Atlantic Ocean, Block Island is a part of Rhode Island and falls in the Washington County of United States. A strait known as Block Island Sound separates the island from the mainland. Every year during summer Block Island hosts the extremely competitive sailboat racing tournament. An alternative format for hosting the Block Island Race Week is followed, so on odd years the Storm Trysail Club hosts the race while in even years the Block Island Race Week organization hosts the event. This highly competitive sailboat racing event draws crowds form distant countries that come to witness the toughest competitors and the most skilled sailors face off against each other circumnavigating the island or competing in the sailing courses at the Block Island Sound to claim the top spot.

With a legacy of over 45 years the Block Island Race Week attracts an average of 160 world class sailing teams each year. According to the current reports a total of 1500 sailors are expected to be taking part in the sixteen different classes of PHRF, IRC, Navigator and One Design events. Held over a period of one week the Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex has grown in terms of national appeal. Rolex has been involved in supporting the cause of sailing throughout the globe from 1958 onwards. The 2009 edition of the Block Island Race Week is to be held from the 21st to the 26th of June has evolved over the years to become one of the most prestigious sailing events in America. Rolex a well respected brand in the world economy has been known for not only sponsoring such events but also employing innovative means of promoting them. As a special initiative by Rolex the regatta that takes place each day in this week long event will be broadcast on the web each night ensuring that people from around the globe will not miss all the high class sailing action.

All skippers that register for the Block Island Racing Week will be given a Rolex special events duffel bag. During the entire week of sailboat racing, Wednesday the 24th of June is known as the Rolex Racing Day. The week long regatta event will culminate into an awards function and winners of the various sailboat racing and related events will be given a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner along with a host of other prizes. This is the first time in the Block Island sailboat racing’s history that all sailors will have a chance of winning an invitation to compete in the Bitter End Yacht Cub’s Pro Am regatta that is slated to be held from the 31st of October to the 7th of November this year. Each day of racing will be followed by an evening get-together that will be sponsored by Rolex along with the other sponsors for the event. This being an odd year automatically puts Storm Trysail Club as the hosting member for this year’s Block Island Race Week.

This year the Block Island race Week is bound to be a riveting event as numerous skilled sailors compete to claim the top spot.
