Rural Roads In Clare To Undergo Works

Ireland (SANEPR.com) September 18, 2008 -- The Department of Transport and Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs today sanctioned the commencement of works, which have been proposed by Clare County Council.

According to Minister of State and local T.D., Mr. Tony Killeen, ‘The 2008 CLÁR Programme is an investment programme designed to tackle the problem of depopulation, decline and lack of services in rural areas. I am delighted to see that Clare County Council is to commence works on fourteen local primary, secondary and tertiary roads projects from its allocation.’

Minister Killeen explained that the projects in CLÁR areas are co-funded by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and the Department of the Transport.

He said that the grant allocation to County Clare, which is the seventh highest of all allocations received by local authorities in Ireland, would be of enormous benefit to local communities across the county.

According to the Clare T.D., 'Clare County Council's allocation was determined by the county's percentage of the total population in CLÁR areas.’

The roads to benefit under the 2008 Programme are L-62901 Ballyartney, Coolmeen (EUR49,880); L-6344 Decomade, Clondagad (EUR27,720); L-82841 Cloontabonniv, Kinturk (22K); L-6312 -21 Mt Callan, Formoyle (EUR50K); L-42002 Lehaknock, Killanniv (EUR20K); L-62361 Ballyvaskin (EUR25K); L-52381 Tullygarvan, Moy (EUR13K); L-83521 Killanniv, Kilmaley (EUR15K); L-8116 Derryabbert, Ayle (EUR24K); L-8194-15 Ballylaghnan, Ogonnelloe (EUR32K); L-40144 Magherabaun, Ayle (EUR44K); L-30182 Clogholia, Castlecrine (EUR13,399.43); L301410 Hurdlestown, Kilseily (EUR20K); L-7126 Ballydonnell/Fahy, Fahymore (EUR20K).

The CLÁR programme is a targeted investment programme for rural areas that suffered more than a 35% drop in population between 1926 and 2002. The programme covers parts of 22 counties and all of Co. Leitrim and benefits a population of nearly 727,000. CLÁR schemes cover a wide variety of developments such as village, housing and schools enhancement, electricity conversion, roads, water supply, sewerage disposal, health, coastal, sports and community projects.
