Tip 1: Drive less.
Investigate carpooling, using your bike, taking public transportation, or telecommuting.
If you drive 20 miles to work each day (round trip: 40 miles) and your car gets the average mileage of 23 miles per gallon, you can save almost $40 per month just by not using your car two days each week. Even after subtracting carpool and transportation fees, you can save roughly $30 per month. Carpooling with two other people five days a week can save you about $60 per month or $720 per year. It’s good for the environment too.

Tip 2: Drive more slowly.
Every mile per hour in speed above 40 increases air resistance on your vehicle and it uses more gas. The most efficient speed for your vehicle is its minimum speed in its highest gear, usually between 45 to 55 miles per hour. Driving at this speed may prevent accidents too.

Tip 3: Install low flow showerheads.
You can save four gallons of heated water per shower by slowing the water flow with a low-flow showerhead. An average family taking four showers per day can save about $48 per month or $576 per year by replacing their showerhead.

Tip 4: Bring your lunch to work.
The average cost of lunch at a restaurant is $6-that’s $120 per month. The U.S. Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion says that you can make your own lunches for about $2.70 each and save $66 per month. It isn’t hard to find healthier lunch choices than those we tend to order out so our health benefits too.

Tip 5: Bring your own coffee to work in a reusable travel mug.
A fancy cup of coffee can run about $2.45. Making your coffee at home costs 28 cents per cup or so. If you normally buy two cups of coffee per day, you can save about $86 per month by bringing your own from home. The benefit of keeping the disposable cup out of your landfill isn’t easy to calculate but it’s real!

Tip 6: Eat dinner out less and when you do, choose a restaurant that carries Green Seal certification.
Green Seal is a program that provides a comprehensive framework to reduce environmental and health impacts of running a restaurant. Standards spell out the best methods for food sourcing, monitoring and reducing energy and water consumption, maintaining air quality, managing waste disposal and reduction, cleaning and landscaping, and others. While Green Seal certifies restaurants at three levels, it encourages owners to create plans for continuous improvement and then tell customers about their efforts.

Tip 7: Use less electricity at home.
The easiest way to cut electricity use at home is to gradually shift all of your light bulbs to the fluorescent CFL type. The bulbs cost more up front but they last about six times longer and use about 1/3 the electricity for the same light output. Buy a couple each month until your home uses only CFL bulbs.

Tip 8: If you need new appliances, consult the FTC’s Appliance Energy Database before you buy.
The database ranks all appliances by the amount of energy they use. If you trade in a 10 year old refrigerator for one of the newer energy star models, for example, you can save $100 per year.

Tip 9: Use less stuff.
Save money and simplify your life by buying less, using less, wearing things out before buying new and recycling everything you can. Recycling isn’t limited to cans, bottles and other trash that goes to the dump. Recycling can also mean giving away unused books, clothing, furniture and other household items to people who are in need. It’s good for the heart, sole and landfill!

Tip 10: Buy carefully.
