Deerfield, Ohio, USA (SANEPR.com) May 26, 2008 -- “Don’t Let your dryer start a fire; keep your home safe and sound,” is Dryer Vent Wizard’s slogan. Over 15,000 house fires resulting in deaths, injuries and millions of dollars in damages occur each year as a result of clogged dryer vent systems. Dryer Vent Wizard, in cooperation with the National Fire Prevention Association, is handing out free dryer vent safety check kits to be use to detect possible venting problems with clothes dryers.

In joining efforts with the NFPA, Dryer Vent Wizard is providing advice to consumers to minimize the risk of dryer fires. They advise consumers to be sure dryer vent systems are up to code with city, state and manufacturers. Plastic or foil vents should be replaced with semi-rigid or solid metal venting. Screen lint trays should be checked before each load and cleaned after each load. The lint screens should also be washed with soap and water every few months to remove residue left behind by fabric softeners. In addition to regular maintenance, dryer vent systems should be professionally cleaned and inspected annually. Keep combustibles like chemical cleaning products or chemical laden rags away from clothes dryers and do not leave the house or go to sleep while the dryer is running. Finally, be sure to check the outside vent cover during cold whether to be sure it is not blocked or frozen shut.

“We have found a huge lack of awareness among consumers who think it’s normal for their dryer to take two to three cycles to dry one load of clothing and don’t realize this is a vent clog warning sign and fire hazard,” says Greg Longe, who along with partner, John Lynch, franchise Dryer Vent Wizard, dry Clothes, Safe Homes, a nation wide chain of dryer vent cleaning, replacement and alteration specialists in the U.S.

Greg and John advise consumers to watch for warning signs of venting problems with their dryers, including clothing taking longer to dry, no lint visible on the lint screen, dryer repeatedly stops during a cycle, moldy smell on clothing after drying, and clothes being very hot after a dry cycle. These signs do not mean the clothes dryer is old and wearing out; it is not normal for a dryer to take several cycles to dry clothes. When a dryer is not functioning properly, it is most likely a clogged venting system which is a serious fire hazard.
