“Dumpster diving is searching through industrial commercial or residential dumpster trash to find items that have been discarded by their owners that may be of value to the dumpster diver,” Sherman explained. “In common cases people will use the cover of night to raid the trash which increases their risk of injury. Many times sites will have dangerous chemicals such as battery acid or lead and even toxic material like asbestos in their rubbish.”
Sherman also discussed illegal disposal and trash burning. It is against the law for any person to burn, dump, or dispose of garbage, refuse, rubbish, swill, ashes or other waste upon any streets, alleys, public places, trails or streams, or private property within the city. "Open burning is the burning of unwanted materials such as paper, trees, brush, leaves, grass, and other debris, where smoke and other emissions are released directly into the air,” says Sherman. Open burning pollutes the air and poses a fire hazard.
