New Delhi. A city court today granted bail to former Union Minister Jagdish Tytler who appeared before it in a defamation case.

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Ajay Kumar Pandey took up the defamation case for the second time after it was transferred from a Ludhiana court on the directions of the Supreme Court.

Harvinder Singh Phoolka, a senior advocate, had lodged a criminal case in a Ludhiana court aganist Tytler for allegedly making derogatory remarks against him in a TV programme, aired on September 7, 2004.

The Supreme Court had transferred the matter to Delhi on the plea of Tytler, who was earlier contesting from the North East Delhi parliamentary seat on Congress ticket, considering various grounds including alleged threats to his life in Ludhiana.

``The role of Tytler during 1984 anti-Sikh riots is still under the judicial scrutiny,`` the complaint noted.

According to the complaint, Tytler had allegedly made derogatory remarks against senior advocate Phoolka who has been taking up the cases of riot victims.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate after hearing the matter granted bail to Tytler on the condition of furnishing a surety bond of Rs 50,000.

The court adjourned the matter for deciding the application of permanent exemption to Tytler till May 23.
