UK (SANEPR.com) May 22, 2008 -- More pressures from working longer and family commitments are creating a hectic lifestyle for people living in UK, says a study done by car rental services firm, Carrental.co.uk.
Eight hundred drivers who were interviewed in UK revealed aspects of their lifestyle, especially regarding driving. Sixty percent speed to work on a daily basis. They described themselves as being aggressive and taking chances with overtaking, etc.
About 33% said they do not even concentrate on the actual driving, while they are focusing on getting to their destination as quickly as possible. And 10 percent said they suffered some kind of injury related hasty driving.
Drivers also engaged in road rage while rushing through traffic. A tenth of all drivers said they had been involved in a road rage incident because they were hurrying to get to where they needed to go.
A surprising finding in the study was that most drivers were anxious about being late for meetings at work – 41% described this is as the main cause of “rush-driving.” Bringing the children home from school was another source of stress for drivers. Getting to the work place on time is also a big concern for drivers who are used to going above the speed limit. Some drivers said that keeping their partners waiting for a romantic dinner was also worrisome and cause for rash driving.
Even in their regular routines, the surveyed drivers said they often ate quickly, did their chores fast, had speedy conversations with friends because they were short of time, and rushed helping kids with homework. About 6.5% described themselves as rushing through sex.
Gareth Robinson, managing director of Carrentals.co.uk described that the research was a call for all UK drivers to slow down. He said that despite the busy schedules brought about by a hectic lifestyle, UK drivers are, in fact, driving faster than ever. The lack of concentration on the road during driving could be fatal, he said.
Robinson added that it is astonishing that for all the things we rush for, we rush to work-related activities the most. He said that he hoped drivers would be encouraged to take the study seriously and slow down the next time they find themselves late for an appointment.
