US auditing 1000 firms for Illegal hires

Phoenix, AZ, November 24, 2009 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced today the issuance of 1,000 Notices of Inspection to employers across the country. The Notices alert business owners that ICE will audit their Form I-9 hiring records to assess compliance with federal employment eligibility verification laws. They are imposing fines and banning companies from Federal contracts.

My take on this issue:

-with high unemployment for legal workers, expect a lot more of these audits going forward

-if you are not following the rules on hiring ...you will become a target

-these are very popular with the voting public

- if you are using a staffing company and they are not following the rules...YOU will be libel along with the staffing provider.

- the process is not difficult if you understand it and works quite well ( we have been doing it for 3 years)

- companies that are following the rules, the problems are minimal. If you are hiring illegal workers you are jeopardizing your business.
