UK (SANEPR.com) October 3, 2008 -- Monsters mingled with film and TV dignitaries for a special party celebrating the re-launch of an award-winning sound design and SX company.
Bang Post Production in Cardiff has undergone a major refurbishment of its main dubbing theatre - one of the biggest outside London - and now has a full Dolby Digital Licence.
Bang now plans to take on additional film and TV post production work, following its success on projects including Abraham’s Point, Doctor Who, Torchwood and Outpost.
Dr Who executive producer/writer Russell T Davies eagerly carried out ribbon cutting duties at the re-launch, watched by more than 60 invited guests from London and Welsh-based production companies, and the BBC.
Guests were given a tour of the refurbished sound facilities and also saw the foley studio in action.
A murderous Cyberman was also let loose although luckily, it was on its best behaviour.
Russell T said: “Fantastic facilities like these prove you don’t have to go to London for quality and talent.”
Traditional geographical areas for production are now changing, he says.
“Take Dr Who as an example. It’s gone round the world and won countless awards and is Britain’s number one TV programme, but was made here in Cardiff.
“You cannot get a better standard of work anywhere else in the country.”
The £150,000 revamp by Munro Acoustics took three weeks to complete and includes both acoustic and cosmetic improvements.
“We can now mix Dolby Cinema, full HD, Dolby E and Dolby Digital EX,” said Paul McFadden, sound designer and co-founder of Bang.
“We’ve made these changes because this is what our clients want,” said Doug Sinclair, supervising sound editor and Bang’s other founder, “a one-stop shop where sound editorial and mixing can be done on one site.”
Bang offers full soundtrack, dialogue editing, FX tracks, ADR, sound design and foley. It also has a working partnership with major studio facilities in London.
For the refurbishment Theatre 1 was given new wall coverings, ceilings and lighting, as well as a new HD projector.
Acoustic treatment and diffuser panels have been installed and tuned to allow mixes to transfer naturally to bigger cinemas.
The mixing console has been upgraded to a Digidesign D Control ES, with multiple ProTools systems controlled from the desk, giving capacity to playback more than 380 tracks of audio in the theatre.
Two new 18-inch sub woofers have also been added to give clients’ mixes the low- end definition they deserve. Picture playback has also been dramatically improved with the incorporation of Avid Media Station.
Bang’s team has two BAFTA Cymru wins, three BAFTA Cymru nominations, two national BAFTA nominations, and a MPSE Golden Reel nomination for sound in a foreign feature.
Paul McFadden was shortlisted for ‘TV Sound Editor of the Year’ at this year’s Conch awards by the UK Screen Association. Bang employee Matthew Cox was also nominated at the Conch awards, for ‘Best Newcomer’.
