Volunteers Needed to Help Save the Planet

Leeds, UK, September 25, 2009 -- They might all be small steps, but every little bit really does help. Change comes when ordinary people act together. Our environment can’t look after itself – it needs every one of us to think, to engage where we can – to be just a little bit more generous and less selfless.

One way in which we can do this is by volunteering our services. When it comes to this sort of work, all of us have a role to play, and we can be of huge value. Volunteering is an exciting, empowering and rewarding thing to do for its own sake – and it usually helps others, and the planet, as well.

Do you have a bit of time to spare and fancy the idea of doing something to help others in a green cause? Many people do, but they’re not quite sure where to start. One excellent way is by logging on to do-it.org.uk – a site specially geared to helping people get involved with their local volunteering opportunities.

Launched in 2001, do-it.org.uk is the most diverse and comprehensive national database of volunteering opportunities in the UK. These are provided by more than 360 volunteer centres and more than 70 national charities.

The site contains masses of information on projects – it’s for you to decide which one or ones you want to become involved in. You can search within a certain area around your home or office and see what you fancy.

The great thing about this sort of work is that it’s flexible. You can choose to commit just an hour or two a week or less, or you can virtually end up full time. You can often claim out-of-pocket expenses back, and if you are on benefits, it doesn’t affect the payments you receive.

If for any reason it doesn’t work out, you can of course leave at any time. But you’re likely to find that you love what you do. You’ll gain experience, make new friends and have the satisfaction that you’re doing something to help other people and the planet.

The Yorkshire Post's new campaign to get you out and volunteering comes after car giant Honda teamed up with do-it-org.uk. Honda is committed to doing whatever it can to improve the environment, and its recently-launched Insight hybrid car uses a combination of a petrol engine and a battery to dramatically improve fuel consumption and cut CO2 emissions. Each Honda dealership has nominated a charity, and for every person who test drives the new Insight, they’ll donate £5 to that nominated charity.
